Mayor Dellums Attends Green Jobs Corps Graduation
The inaugural class of Oakland’s Green Jobs Corps graduated last Monday, after completing the nine-month job-training pipeline program. The program, which strives to fight poverty and pollution simultaneously, is comprised of three entities: Laney College, Cypress Mandela Training Center, and Growth Sector, Inc. Together, they form a landmark partnership that provides green-collar skills training and green education to low-income Oakland residents and young adults with barriers to employment.
At the event, Mayor Ron Dellums shook hands with each graduate as they crossed the stage and later spoke, congratulating the class and calling them “the astronauts of the green revolution”. He said they were among the first fighting the battle to reclaim this planet, and by the time of graduation, many of graduates were poised to do just that: some had already secured jobs while others had interviews with various partnering business, including Sunlight & Power, REC Solar, and Weather Tight.

Oakland – The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), Mayor Ron Dellums, the Mayor’s Community Task Forces and Oakland Education Association today announced that the United States Department of Education awarded $2.1 million for the Teach Tomorrow in Oakland (TTO) initiative.

Mayor Dellums Says Federal Stimulus Funds Will Help Clean and Green Oakland
Oakland, CA — Mayor Ron Dellums joined the Oakland Housing Authority today to accept $800,000 in “brownfield” grants from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to evaluate potential contamination in targeted redevelopment areas. The grants are largely funded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“Our efforts to aggressively advocate for much-needed resources for our community are beginning to bear fruit,” said Mayor Dellums. “In partnership with the EPA, DTSC and local agencies like the Oakland Housing Authority and EBALDC, we are cleaning and greening Oakland, transforming previously contaminated areas into vibrant, dynamic, healthy communities where families and businesses can thrive.”
EPA awarded the City of Oakland $600,000 in grant funding to assess contamination throughout West Oakland and in the area surrounding the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Seminary Avenue in East Oakland. EPA announced the awards at a press conference held at Lion Creek Crossing, a new housing development in east Oakland for which the Oakland Housing Authority is receiving $200,000 to complete nearby cleanups previously subsidized with EPA grants.

Mayor Ronald Dellums, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and United Way Launch Bank on Oakland
Oakland, CA – Oakland Mayor Ronald V. Dellums, in partnership with the Governor’s Office and the United Way of the Bay Area, announced the launch of Bank on Oakland, an initiative that will allow families dependent on high-cost check-cashers to open a starter bank account with federally insured financial institutions in Oakland. The Oakland program is part of the statewide Bank on California program formally launched by Governor Schwarzenegger in December 2008. Oakland is one of the first California cities to launch Bank on California, and 42 banking locations at 16 financial institutions throughout the city are already accepting new account applications.
Mayor Dellums said: “At a time of historic economic meltdown, to be able to provide resources that will allow our residents to become financially educated and to engage them in this process is absolutely imperative. Our city has more than 30,000 families who have no banking experience, no checkbook and no bank account. Of those families, 98 percent of them have some sort of income and 65 percent of them are fully employed. Bank on Oakland is an essential component to bringing us out of economic uncertainty.”
Residents who would like to know more about Bank on Oakland or want help getting a bank account can call 2-1-1 and visit www.bankonoakland.ca.gov.

I think we’ve got to join in and say it’s time now for access for all, affordability for all, and aggressive preventive action that addresses the social determinants that impact upon healthcare.”
In addition to the Oakland location, local forums were held in San Diego, Clovis and Los Angeles, where Governor Schwarzenegger, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Melody Barnes hosted the statewide event. Participants represented a diverse group of Californians that include consumers, businesses, labor, patients, providers and insurers.
Governor Uses Oakland’s Green Job Corp as Model for the State
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger launched the California Green Corps this week in Sacramento. Building up communities and the state’s green workforce, the California Green Corps will place at-risk young adults aged 16-24 into jobs in California’s emerging green economy.
Mayor Ron Dellums, who was invited by the governor to participate, because of Oakland’s leadership on green jobs training said: "We come together against a backdrop of two important problems that confront this nation. One, an unprecedented economic downturn and the extraordinary challenges of global warming that require us to do our level best. I'm extraordinarily pleased to be here today, because Oakland pioneered this idea with Ella Baker Center, Green for All and several other organizations. We put together resources with the support of the Oakland City Council and community to create the first green jobs corps idea that has now mushroomed not only into a state program but into a national program. It embraces a very simple yet extraordinarily elegant idea - fight poverty and fight pollution simultaneously.”
